  1. Here are some of the more exotic military and geographic terms, code
  2. names and slang words being used in reports from the Persian Gulf.

  4. ATTRIT...lose troops by attrition or other means, such as enemy action.
  5. AWACS....Airborne Warning and Control System. A jet that monitors air
  6.          space with its big external radar dome and guides fighters and
  7.          bombers to their targets. it can stay in the air for more than
  8.          11 hours.
  9. BDA..... Pentagon lingo for bomb damage assessment.
  10. BEACHES..fighting terrain, Arabian deserts.
  11. BUFF.....nickname for B-52 bombers, which stands for "Big Ugly Fat
  12.          Fellow". Sometimes called "Fat Albert".
  13. CARPET BOMBING...called "rolling thunder" in Vietnam, intensive bombing
  14.          in a limited space, usually by B-52s. The metaphor is to laying
  15.          a wall to wall carpet of high explosives.
  16. COLLATERAL DAMAGES...military jargon for civilian losses.
  17. CHAF.....metal foil dispensed by warplanes to confuse enemy radar.
  18. CRAF.....Civil Reserve Air Fleet.
  19. DOD......Department Of Defense.
  20. ECMS.....Electronic Countermeasures, an array of complex, computerized
  21.          equipment built into most modern fighters and bombers. ECMS are
  22.          designed to defeat enemy radars by jamming, confusing and
  23.          deceiving them.
  24. FROGFOOT..Iraq has about 60 of these SU-25 attack planes similar to the
  25.          A-10 Thunderbolts deployed by the allies.
  26. FUR BALL..military pilot slang for the hectic tangle of air to air
  27.          dogfights.
  28. GOLDEN BB...Soviet doctrine the Iraqis are said to be emulating in their
  29.          air defense efforts.  If enough bullets and other projectiles
  30.          fill the sky during an air raid, at least a few are bound to
  31.          hit the target.
  32. HUMVEE...High Mobility Multipurpose wheeled Vehicle, a large truck-like
  33.          vehicle that has replaced the traditional military jeep.
  34. JUKE.....move quickly to evade enemy fire.
  35. KILLSACK...minefields and oil-filled trenches beyond the Saudi-Kuwaiti
  36.          border which us ground forces would have to move through if a
  37.          ground war begins.
  38. LANTIRN...Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared Night.  One
  39.          model of the F-16 fighter, called the "night falcon" for its
  40.          advanced night-flying capability, has "pods" underneath which
  41.          hold lantirn systems.
  42. MORT THEMSELVES OUT...jet fighter pilot slang for planes shooting one
  43.          another accidentally. The term fratricide is also used.
  44. MRES.....military issued food rations, officially "meals, ready to eat".
  45. REPUBLICAN GUARD...The 30,000-man elite force of Iraqi troops,
  46.          considered the backbone of Saddam Hussein's army.
  47. SCUD.....Soviet made SS-1 surface to surface ballistic missile.
  48. SEBKHA...an Arab word for underground river. Sebkhas that turn the
  49.          ground into quagmires lie near the Saudi border and south of
  50.          Kuwait City.
  51. SLAM.....Stand-off Land Attack Missile, launched from a carrier-launched
  52.          attack plane.
  53. SMART BOMBS...bombs guided to their targets by on-board video or laser
  54.          system.
  55. SORTIE...one mission by a single military plane.
  56. STEALTH..term applied to planes designed to remain nearly invisible to
  57.          enemy radar.
  58. SAM......Surface to Air Missile.
  59. TOMAHAWK...unmanned, rocket-launched, jet-propelled cruise missile fired
  60.          from ships or submarines.
  61. TOW......acronym for Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided
  62.          missile.
  63. TRIPLE A'S...pilot jargon for anti-aircraft artillery, once known as
  64.          ack-ack.
  65. WADI.....an Arab word for dry ravine or valley. A wadi runs all along
  66.          the Kuwait border, and Iraqis have set up a defense line behind
  67.          him.
  68. WILD WEASEL...the F-4G fighter whose main mission is electronic
  69.          countermeasures that can knock out or suppress enemy radar
  70.          installations.
  71. ZULU.....Universal Time Coordinated (UTC), formerly called Greenwich
  72.          Mean Time (GMT).  When it's 0000 Zulu, or midnight UTC/GMT,
  73.          It's 7 p.m. on the US east coast and 3 a.m. in Iraq, Kuwait and
  74.          Saudi Arabia.  The military uses Zulu as its time reference
  75.          worldwide.
